F1 Race Streaming

IT WASN’T quite a race that stopped the nation, but Mark Webber’s fairytale formula one debut in the Australian Grand Prix 10 years ago captured the imagination of the hundreds of thousands watching the race on television and at the track.

Driving for the impoverished Minardi team, then owned by expatriate Australian Paul Stoddart, Webber defied the odds by finishing fifth in an ailing car that had been on the verge of expiring from early in the race.

Webber returns to Albert Park a decade later for his 11th tilt at the AGP winner’s trophy this weekend, having equalled – but never bettered – his maiden result. None of his 175 F1 races since has matched the emotional outpouring that greeted his unexpected points finish on March 3, 2002, when the crowd greeted him as if he had won.

His plucky drive overshadowed Michael Schumacher’s victory and prompted an unprecedented – and still unrepeated – second podium ceremony, celebrating with Stoddart in front of a cheering mass of racegoers. ”It was the most memorable day of my life,” recalled Stoddart, the Melbourne-born aviation entrepreneur who nurtured Minardi’s following as F1′s loveable losers. ”I think Mark will also tell you it’s one of the big moments of his life. It was an outstanding moment in his career. Aussies love battlers. It goes down in history as the most famous two points in F1.”

No race during his five-year ownership of Minardi – now Red Bull’s junior team Toro Rosso – gave him more satisfaction than Webber’s nerve-racking drive to fifth place against all odds. A first-lap crash eliminated eight cars, a stroke of luck that helped elevate Webber into the points – along with his trademark grit and determination.

”We then found ourselves in a competitive position in as much as there were points to be had and there weren’t too many cars running,” Stoddart said. ”Of course, what nobody knew was that the car was terminally ill from the third lap. We had warnings coming on that basically said the differential [a vital component in the transmission] wasn’t going to last another lap. How it lasted the rest of the race I’ll never know.”

Stoddart gave Webber his F1 break because he believed the youngster had the potential to become Australia’s first world champion since Alan Jones, who won the title in 1980.

Nothing has changed his mind, and Stoddart regards Webber as the ”moral” winner of the 2010 title, which he lost to teammate and now double title-holder Sebastian Vettel at the final race. ”We’d be sitting here talking about Mark Webber, 2010 world champion, if it hadn’t been for his injury,” Stoddart maintained.

Formula 1 Launches F1 2012 Timing App: Fan’s Opinion

Formula 1 has launched their F1 2012 Timing App for Apple iOS and Android, available in the iTunes store and the Android Market. The app sells for about $31 in both outlets and was created by app designer Soft Pauer.

I think the app really makes the ultimate compliment to watching the races on a nice big HDTV. I can’t wait to sit in front of the TV and really be able to follow and track everything that’s going on. The app offers live timing and track positioning for every Grand Prix weekend for the 2012 season, delivered live to your mobile device.

The app does not offer live streaming of F1 races or video, but I hope that is coming. The sport just made a huge technical deal with Tata Communications to set up and unify their high speed data connections direct with each racetrack. I hope this deal will lead to pay-per-view of F1 races, as I would eagerly pay to watch them. The app does offer live access to all the technical, race, driver and team data, in real time and is something I’m really looking forward to using. Here are the features of the F1 2012 Timing App for Formula 1:

Real-time track positions

A 3D map of each race shows each driver, as they are positioned in the race. Fans will also be able to use the gyro features of their device to change the view of the circuit. As the race happens, each car is shown on a real-time 3D map of the track.

Timing Data

All live timing data from the races is streamed direct to the app from Formula One Management’s trackside Technical Facility. This includes positions, lap times, speeds and every detail you can think of.

Live Leaderboard

The live leaderboard shows timing information, along with driver and team info to easily see the entire field. The leaderboard coordinates with the live map, allowing for easy switching back and forth.

Live Pause and Replay

You can pause and replay the app data (but not video, as the app includes no video). After the event, “racepacks” with full race data will be available to watch at your leisure.

Favorite Driver Selection

The app allows fans to select their favorite driver, and then have their data and updates be a priority, allowing you to constantly monitor his progress. The app also allows the corners to be selected, so exciting areas can be monitored.

Other Data

The app will feature all the data found on the F1 website, including standings, team and driver information, race calendar and histories, track data and more.
